This year our family decided to participate in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA for short) by purchasing a half share at a local farm. This is our experience.

1. What are the differences between a full-share and a half-share?
At Deri Farm, a full share is meant to provide a family of four with enough vegetables for a week. And a partial share is designed for two people who require a smaller portion. We decided on a partial share this year since it was our first time signing up for a CSA. In our case, the partial share provides plenty of vegetables for our family. On pick up days, we often have vegetables in our fridge from the week before.
Shareholders can add to their share, too. Everyone can make eggs and poultry a part of their share.
A working share is also available. A friend of ours spends a few hours a week helping Justin in the fields. In return, her family receives a partial share.
2. How much does a share cost? And what months are vegetables available?
We paid $300 for a partial share (June through October). Full share owners pay twice as much.
3. How are the vegetables distributed? Do you pick your own?
The vegetables are offered buffet style in the barn each week. Our farmer details how much full share and partial share owners can take on a wipe off board near the tables. In the spirit of recycling, we bring our own bags for pick up.
